Conventional advice to eat less, count calories, stop smoking, drink less and exercise more is just too simplistic for most people because there are more complex emotional issues to resolve first.
Our brains work on two levels: the conscious and the unconscious. The conscious mind is governed by reason and logic so if our problems were solely contained in our conscious mind, we could solve them instantly by deciding, “I will eat smaller portions” or "I will go for a run" or "I will stop drinking a bottle of wine every evening".
It is our unconscious mind that holds on to these unhealthy patterns of behaviour. If we do them repeatedly, they eventually become something we do automatically without really being aware it or thinking it through.
