Trauma is caused by a stressful or disturbing experience which our brain is unable to process properly.
Many of us have suffered trauma, big and small. Most of the time, we come through these bad experiences, recover and move on.
Trauma may occur after involvement in (or being a witness to) a conflict, a serious illness, the death of a loved one, a medical emergency, an attack, or being bullied or abused.
Symptoms include flashbacks, numbness, fear, panic attacks, scattered thinking, depression, intrusive thoughts and nightmares.
For example, if you have suffered childhood neglect or abuse, it may have left you with embedded negative beliefs about yourself. Or if you have been sexually abused or raped, you may find it difficult to form and sustain healthy relationships.
